Aakash Gupta’s opener is the kind of number that makes you re-read the sentence: “AI bots have now spun up almost 3 billion throwaway computers through one company most people have never heard of, and that company just got valued at $15.75 billion. A year ago it was worth $1.1 billion.” The company is Modal. The $750M Series D, led by Accel, values it at $15.75B — and Modal itself says it has crossed a $1B annualised run rate, with usage tripled since its Series C and 15x year-over-year growth.

The mechanism underneath is beautifully simple, which is why Aakash’s thread is worth the slow read. AI coding tools can’t know whether generated code works until they run it — and you don’t want the bot running untested code on your own machine. So the bot spins up a fresh cloud computer, runs the code, inspects the result, throws the machine away, and repeats. His phrase for it: “checking its own homework, and Modal rents it the scratch paper by the second.” Modal calls the product Sandboxes, and that one product alone now brings in $300M a year — as big as the whole company was in May. The agent economy doesn’t monetise at the point of generation. It monetises at the point of verification.

Then the valuation walk, which Aakash lays out with unusual arithmetic honesty. Last fall: ~$60M in revenue at a $1.1B valuation — roughly 18x. May: $4.65B on $300M — about 15.5x, and the round was repriced mid-process from $2.5B on hot demand. Today: $1B in revenue at $15.75B — about 16x. The valuation is up ~14x in a year while the multiple actually fell — nearly the entire jump came from the business growing ~15x. That’s the healthy version of a mega-valuation: compounding revenue, not compounding fantasy.

The deeper engineering detail is the moat. Modal owns no data centres. It built its own filesystem, scheduler, container runtime and networking, and rents GPUs across more than twenty clouds — up from five a year ago. In a GPU crunch, that’s the better position: the meta-layer that routes around scarcity instead of the owner of scarce metal. Headcount is around 150, only ~30 more than May — $1B in run rate on a company the size of a Series A team. CEO Erik Bernhardsson said in May that coding had been driving everything for six months; five months later, the bots are still running up the tab. When the throwaway computer becomes the agent’s native resource, the company that rents the scratch paper by the second ends up taxing the whole agentic economy.

Late on October 15th, Mark Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang tag-teamed the launch the way only Meta does it now — from their own accounts. Zuck: “Muse Spark Open — weights releasing today — runs great on new Mac Studios thanks to work with @johnternus and Apple.” Wang, quote-posting him with the boast: “muse spark open — weights out today! best US open-source model, and runs on the new mac studio.” A photo, two posts, 1.5M views on Zuck’s in hours. Musk’s launch rule from last week’s Argon cycle — CEOs posting directly is the distribution — now has Meta as its proof.

Two things are genuinely new here. The first is the framing: “best US open-source model” — the nationality qualifier. Open-weight October has been the season (FishAudio’s Drama 3 went open-weight last week), but this is the first flagship open release that introduces itself with a passport. The open-model race now has a leaderboard with flags on it, and Meta wants to be America’s entry. The second is the surface: not a cloud API, but the Mac Studio on your desk. Frontier-class weights running locally, thanks to work with John Ternus and Apple — inference is moving to the edge, and the desk is becoming a deployment target, not just a client.

The Network Was Never a Knot

Deedy’s verdict last night: “This is one of the most important results in AI, period. TLDR: neural networks are not tangled knots (polysemanticity is wrong).” The paper behind it — one of the largest interpretability research efforts in history — says neurons can be studied directly, without first “unfolding” them with a second model. His headline number: 90% of neurons in Qwen-32B have one job. The messy, multi-purpose, polysemantic neuron — the thing that made interpretability feel hopeless — may have been mostly a measurement artefact.

The story inside the story is Nick Cammarata’s arc, and it reads like a correction the field has been waiting a decade to print. Cammarata co-authored early mechanistic-interpretability work at OpenAI and left pessimistic: neural networks looked like arbitrarily tangled knots. He then ran OpenAI’s first large-scale automated interpretability project — and with primitive tools, only ~2% of neurons were legible. That number defined the field’s mood for years. But with modern agentic tools and a closer look, he now says the vast majority of neurons — in models up to trillions of parameters — are legible, and their circuits are beautiful. Many famous examples of “tangled” neurons, he says, were simply misunderstood. The roadblocks he expected mostly aren’t there.

Why it matters, in one line of Cammarata’s: “interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don’t think we can solve alignment if we don’t know what we’re building.” His belief now is that ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time it’s most needed — possibly soon — as automated scientists improve. Deedy’s gloss is the one to pin: we’re close to a fully interpretable model; the “it’s just numbers” era is over; interpretability is going from art to science.

Founder comp is the one number that VCs, employees and journalists all read differently — which is exactly why it’s a character test in spreadsheet form. A 14% fixed-pay cut at a public company reads as capital discipline from the top. A bonus-heavy structure reads as pay-for-performance. Neither tells you the full story, but both tell you something no founder interview will: how the person who set the number thinks about money when nobody’s watching. Match your skills to their problems. Reach out and raise the odds. For the reaching-out part he gives the Contact Quadrant: two axes — 1-to-1 vs 1-to-many, friendly vs stranger — giving four doors: referral, cold outreach, content, public pitch. And the math: reach out to a hundred people. Opportunities create leverage, leverage creates options, options create freedom.
